Mathematics
Early mathematical experiences and explorations begin in the Early Years and are developed throughout the school following the National Curriculum Guidelines. Children take part in concrete, practical activities to develop basic concepts of number, shape, space, measures (length, weight, capacity, time, money) and data handling. These are reinforced by more formal activities, where evidence of learning is recorded. Children learn to apply their understanding of number, shape, space and measures.
Mathematical learning is promoted in other areas of the curriculum enabling children to realise that maths is an integral part of everyday life.
We have been using the scheme Power Maths by Pearson throughout KS1. Power Maths is an exciting whole-class mastery approach that works for every child. The only mastery programme perfectly aligned to the White Rose Maths progressions and schemes of learning, it’s written specifically for UK classrooms by leading mastery experts, and is recommended by the DFE.
The Maths videos (found on the menu to the right) explain and model how we teach Maths at Hurst Green Infant School looking at the progression and vocabulary used from Nursery to Year 2. As a school we take a mastery approach focusing on fluency, reasoning and problem solving all teachers use a range of Maths equipment and resources to teach Maths including 'Power Maths', 'WhiteRose' and 'Nrich'.
